Quantum Computing in the Navy

Updated: Apr 16, 2021

As with most divisions of the defense department, the Navy is investing heavily in quantum computing

The Quantum Information Science (QIS) program supports basic and applied research. The QIS program focuses on developing underlying science and technology for the application of quantum systems to information process tasks that include computing and communication.

Research Concentration Areas

The creation of high fidelity, on demand, entangled and quantum correlated states of light

Quantum interfaces between microwave and optical systems

Quantum memories between applications of small quantum computers

Research Challenges and Opportunities

On-demand high-N Fock state generation

Useful applications of quantum correlated

Component demonstrations of sufficient quality to support large scale entanglement distribution

Quantification of performance of small, noisy quantum computers for useful tasks
